          The Art of Conducting - Legendary Conductors of a Golden Era


This is a tribute to legends in the Art of Conducting. The variety of personalities, characters, vision and outcome are signs of marvelous experiences and unforgettable moments for all musicians, live audiences and recordings. 

Although recordings are quite old, they keep the essence of the Conductor expertise.
Fortunately, we still have some few recordings of excellent Conductors which guided so many to the lands of immortality. 

Thank each one of them for they are blessings pouring out their best efforts and performances. Enjoy them as they truly deserve to be remembered.

The very first moment you listen to a composition of Morten Lauridsen you may start to have unique sensations, a marvelous mixture of mystic, romantic, reflexive, transcendent and internal feelings.


Each follower of any of his musical creations will continue to enjoy his magical works, one after the other, in a marvelous journey, creating a pleasant atmosphere of space and time, few times heard or thought before.


We celebrate his 80 years all this month with some of his best masterpieces.

Morten Johannes Lauridsen (born February 27, 1943) is an American composer. A National Medal of Arts recipient (2007),[1] he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1994 to 2001,[2] and is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he taught for 52 years until his retirement in 2019.[3]

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Lauridsen worked as a Forest Service firefighter and lookout (on an isolated tower near Mount St. Helens), where he remained on this tower alone for 10 weeks. Lauridsen stated that it was a great time of self-reflection for him, and that it helped him realize that music needed to become a central part of his life. He attended Whitman College for 2 years, before traveling south to study composition at the University of Southern California with Ingolf Dahl, Halsey Stevens, Robert Linn, and Harold Owen.[4] He began teaching at USC in 1967 and has been on their faculty ever since.[3]

In 2006, Lauridsen was named an "American Choral Master" by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2007 he received the National Medal of Arts from the President in a White House ceremony, "for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide".

His works have been recorded on more than 200 CDs, five of which have received Grammy Award nominations, including O Magnum Mysterium by the Tiffany Consort, A Company of Voices by Conspirare, Sound The Bells by The Bay Brass, and two all-Lauridsen discs entitled Lux Aeterna by the Los Angeles Master Chorale led by Paul Salamunovich, and Nocturnes with the Polyphony choir and the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Stephen Layton. His principal publishers are Peermusic (New York/Hamburg) and Faber Music (London).

A recipient of numerous grants, prizes, and commissions, Lauridsen chaired the Composition department at the USC Thornton School of Music from 1990 to 2002 and founded the School's Advanced Studies program in Film Scoring. He has held residencies as guest composer/lecturer at over 100 universities and has received honorary doctorates from Oklahoma State University, Westminster Choir College, King's College, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and Whitman College. In 2014 he was invited to be Honorary Artistic President of Interkultur/World Choir Games. In 2016 he was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Life in Music Award. In late February 2020, via an update on his Facebook page, Lauridsen revealed he had retired from the Thornton School of Music in the spring of 2019, after having taught classes there for over 50 years. He will still travel to university residencies and concerts worldwide.[5]

Lauridsen now divides his time between Los Angeles and his home in the San Juan Archipelago off the northern coast of Washington State.

                            Nuestra Palabra

                                                                                    "Quien no es apto para dar, 
                                                                                    no espera recibir"
 
       Aquel que tiene el hábito de dar, siempre tendrá que dar, potencialmente es rico ; saber dar es la más hermosa y codiciada de las virtudes porque la sabiduría la aquilata : el ignorante no sabe dar. Se da al prójimo lo que el prójimo necesita, no lo que él te pida, por esta razón no se debe ofrecer lo que tu consideras que tienes en demasía, porque no es así.

            Lo que tenemos son herramientas de trabajo, y de ellas no debemos deshacernos. La herramienta del capitalista es su dinero y no lo puede dar porque se despojaría de esa herramienta - que lo habilita para producir dinero. 

           Es injusto cuando pensamos que el hombre rico debe dar su dinero a los pobres, como sería torpe que el carpintero diera su serrucho al que no sabe manejarlo. Se da lo que se produce al que lo necesita, pero no se da lo que se tiene porque nos quedaremos sin nada.

          El saber dar es una difícil ciencia que es poco común entre los civilizados, porque para dar no se debe usar el consejo de la cabeza sino del corazón. Si el que da son cosas, cosas debe producir, cosas materiales ; pero si el que da, da amor, mucho amor debe producir, y si lo que da es sabiduría, sabio debe ser. Nadie puede dar lo que no tiene, y si lo pretende hacer, dará lo falso de él, porque eso es lo que puede dar.         

          "No es oro todo lo que brilla" y libre Dios al prójimo de aquel que le ofrece dar sabiduría como se ofrece una mercancía. La sabiduría ni se vende , ni se negocia, ni se regatea ; la sabiduría se da al que la necesite y la solicita, como se da pan al que tiene hambre.

                            Incertidumbre

Si tendremos que marchar por el mundo
como el sol y la luna :
sin encontrarnos nunca,
mirándonos de lejos . . . 


Si tendremos que ser siempre
pasajeros de ensueños,
diciéndonos adiós
de rutas diferentes . . . 

Si este cariño tuyo y mío
se perderá en la nada,
sin poder hacer ángulo,
sin encontrar un vértice.

                                               Si tendrás que ser siempre el lucero
                                               que tiembla allá en la noche, 
                                               lejano y transparente
                                               como una gota azul . . . 

                                               Y yo el cándido árbol
                                               que alza su copa verde,

Comienza con la salida de la segunda Luna Nueva después del Solsticio de Invierno.

Las festividades empiezan el 22 de Enero, despiden al año viejo y están destinadas a traer suerte y prosperidad en el nuevo.

El Conejo de Agua simboliza -entre otras cosas- la vigilancia, el ingenio y la mente rápida.

En el Horóscopo Chino, los signos se determinan por el año de nacimiento de una persona.

Vale señalar que los años de nacimiento correspondientes a este signo son: 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 y 2023.

Se cree que el Año Nuevo chino se remonta al siglo XIV a. C., cuando gobernaba la dinastía Shang. Sus orígenes están impregnados de leyendas. Una historia dice que un monstruo llamado Nian (“Año”) atacaba a las poblaciones de las aldeas al comienzo de cada año.

Nian tenía miedo de los ruidos fuertes, las luces brillantes y el color rojo. La gente utilizó estas cosas para ahuyentar a la bestia.

Esta época tiene diversas características y la principal es que se trata de un momento de Esperanza.

Y nos sumamos a cada uno de los lectores con la Esperanza de compartir buenos augurios de Armonía, Paz y Prosperidad.
